© Reuters. U.S. auto safety regulator expands Honda (HMC) steering investigation
In a report made public on Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) revealed that the safety regulators are expanding an investigation into Honda (NYSE:) Civic sedans amid ongoing complaints of steering issues.
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation launched a probe into about 238,000 2022-23 Honda Civics back in March after the department received 145 complaints alleging a momentary increase in steering effort.
The complainants described the defect as “sticky steering.”
As of November 29, the agency had been informed of over 1,300 incidents, with a minimum of 14 resulting in crashes. Among these crashes, 11 were reported to have involved roadway departure due to an inability to address the steering issue. Two of the crash incidents were associated with alleged overcorrection of the steering wheel.
Shares of HMC are up 1.45% in afternoon trading on Friday.
There have been three injuries, according to the report.
